A strong Union force intercepted Lee's march at Gettysburg, where, in a titanic three-day battle -- the largest of the Civil War -- the Confederates made a valiant effort to break the Union lines. In the second, high-profit stage, slave owners earned enormous income from the cash crop they grew for export. Fort Henry's fall opened the Tennessee River to Union gunboats and shipping as far as Muscle Shoals, Alabama. When captured, the blockade runners and cargo were sold and the proceeds given to the Union sailors, but the British crews were released.

Hood's campaign ended when Union forces under Thomas defeated him decisively at Nashville, Tennessee, on December 15-16, 1864. Many African Americans were ill-prepared to take economic advantage of integration and were left behind in urban ghetto slum conditions or remained in rural poverty. In addition to its diplomatic triumphs, the Union achieved a second major military objective in 1863, the occupation of East Tennessee. The established church had shown a friendliness to slavery interests which harmonized with its traditional support of the existing social and economic regime of which it was the beneficiary. That the "war was won in the West" has become axiomatic. He was famous for his essay, “Civil Disobedience”, and his book, Walden.
