That was the high water mark of Delaware slavery. Christians were called upon ending the sinful practice of slavery. The economic lives of planters, former slaves, and nonslaveholding whites, were transformed after the Civil War. Slavery divided the two major parties along pro-slavery and "popular sovereignty" lines.
