Confederate Virginia was a mere 60 miles south and the neutral, but largely pro-confederate, State of Maryland line was just 12 miles below Gettysburg. The Confederate military leadership included many veterans from the United States Army and United States Navy who had resigned their Federal commissions and had won appointment to senior positions in the Confederate armed forces.

Brooks of South Carolina took a cane and beat Massachusetts Sen. Foute, a former midshipman on the CSS Virginia, consisting of a handwritten account describing the Battle of Hampton Roads on 9 March 1862. I think that these States would do all in their power to keep the border States slave States.

Fourteenth Amendment to the Constitution is ratified, defining citizenship. These generalities, and the abuses that went with them, prompted the adoption of the fifteenth amendment in 1870. Cast your whole vote, not a strip of paper merely, but your whole influence. The rough drafts of rosters simply duplicate the information contained in the Confederate rosters compiled by the department. Lincoln also believed that the vast majority of Southerners were lukewarm about independence and had been forced to accept secession by irresponsible political leaders.

Six of his associates follow at a later date. In 1785 he wrote of a "total emancipation" with "the consent of the masters, rather than by their extirpation." The slavery issue was related to sectional competition for control of the territories, and the Southern demand for a slave code for the territories was the issue used by Southern politicians to split the Democratic Party in two, which all but guaranteed the election of Lincoln and secession.

Mason family correspondence, 1822-1845, contains correspondence to James Murray Mason (1798-1871) concerning the estate of his father-in-law, Benjamin Chew and Mason's upcoming marriage to Chew's daughter.
