Zenocrates has eight gods: five are named after the planets; the sixth has all the fixed stars as his members, the seventh and eighth being the Sun and Moon. Though, the Romans and the Greeks had encountered the Celts in wars centuries earlier, it is only the 1st century BC that historians began to observe their cultures and customs. Noah's wife, for example, came regularly to be presented as a shrew, who would not enter the ark until she had been beaten into submission; and Herod always appears as a blustering tyrant, whose fame still survives in a proverb of Shakespeare's coinage—'to out-Herod Herod.' During this period, spoken Greek became more prevalent in the written tradition, as demotic Greek came to be used more and more over the Attic idiom and the katharevousa reforms. Certainly, it is very often wrong but usually not deliberately. By drawing Madonna and her son like living human beings, by dramatizing the Christian history, they silently substituted more moment to them than to represent the macerations of the Magdalen. However, I am also firmly of the opinion that the familiarity can be a passing one, and that it is not necessary to pore over the original ancient Greek in order to attain an appreciation of the riveting stories and flights of imagination they have handed down to us.
