Greek empathy for the Trojan side is to a certain extent evident already in Homer and in earlier tragedies. 28 Euripides reverses the per- spective and has the Trojan women pity the Greeks. In the 8th century, two poems that were sung as part of tradition since the 12th century BC were sung by Homer and written down by his students. The question is neither explicitly raised nor, of course, resolved in the Phaedo; but a passage in the Republic (352d-354a), with which we will be concerned in section 3.2, suggests that Plato took the ordinary notion of soul, in all its richness and bewildering complexity, to be well-formed and coherent, and to be capable of supporting the requirements of his own theory.

Ancient Greece started its Civilization around 2500 B. Over a dozen writers recounted the battle and its aftermath within a century of those events taking place, and the British Library holds manuscripts of many of these texts. The principle of popular sovereignty seems to have been a product of the middle ages.
