This composition, best known through an orchestral arrangement by Maurice Ravel, was written in commemoration of his friend, the architect Viktor Hartmann. His increased familiarity with Mitrofan Belyayev, the Belyayev Circle, and correspondence and advice from Tchaikovsky led to a very productive time for Rimsky-Korsakov when he experimented more with his composition technique. He collaborated with McCoy Tyner and Elvin Jones in his namesake quartet on albums such as First Meditations and Gleanings, and his famous chord substitutions based on major third cycles known as his namesake "changes" are first seen in the track "Lazy Bird" on Blue Train and later seen in "Countdown" and "Naima." In place of key relationships and harmonic progression, small motivic units gain importance. This composer of the ballet Semiramis wrote a work in which Cynire is asked by the title nymph to search for her lover in Echo and Narcissus, but he might be better known for writing about a priestess who is magically transported away from being sacrificed by her father in Iphigenie en Aulide and Iphigenie en Tauride. After the composer put aside a G minor work in the same genre, he wrote this piece in less than two months at the beginning of 1841.

Vincent Persichetti's Parables XIV and XXV were written for this instrument, which has a secondary solo role in Shostakovich's First Piano Concerto. Three of them are employed at the opening of Ashkenazy's orchestration of Pictures at an Exhibition, as opposed to the one usually used. From his one act, he derived no benefit whatever, moral or practical, except the experience gained. Karatyghin informs us that Julia Mussorgsky is said to have been "fairly nimble at the piano, of a romantic, excitable, dreamy, affectionate disposition".
