At 7:00 pm, Number 31 takes its inaugural roundtrip run on the Strasburg Rail Road, returning steam locomotion to America’s oldest shortline railroad. Assistance was speedily secured and the young man was brought to the Pottsville Hospital without delay, where it was found that the right leg had been severed near the hip and the left leg near the knee. The railroad had profound effects on American life. Phelps and Son, who finished the road in 1871, at a cost of about $500,000 including the bridge across the lake.

In the nineteenth century, like today, new technologies changed the way that Americans lived. Augusta was situated on the Savannah River and it was much closer. The railroads also lied about the Northwest, at times, to encourage immigration and settlement. Some early trains did not have seats in the cars, but passengers carried rocking chairs to sit in as they dashed along at high speed. This item is one that, although wrong in many of its details, isn't completely false in an overall sense and is perhaps more fairly labeled as "Partly true, but for trivial and unremarkable reasons."
