Pottsville Journal of January 4, 1919 A work train on the Lizard Creek branch of the Lehigh Valley Railroad Company, was wrecked at about six o'clock Friday evening about one hundred yards west of the Schuylkill County Almshouse. At the time of the take over the railroad is completed and open to public service from Limón to Matina, 21 ½ miles, and from Alajuela to Cartago, 27 miles.

The caboose passed over his body almost severing it near the hips. The Wheeling and Lake Erie had a small number of passenger trains, including a pair that operated between Cleveland and Wheeling and stopped at Kent and Mogadore. The Rochester & Genesee Valley Railroad is built south to Avon to connect with the Erie. It soon became apparent that there was so much money to be made in railroading that the private sector could go it alone.

An ice railway was laid each winter until 1883. 1880 - The Grand Trunk Railway extends its line to Chicago, thus providing a through route from the American Midwest to the St. In 1980, the Chessie System merged with the Family Lines System to become the CSX Corporation. Competitive subscriptions among local governments determined its Tennessee route.

This was approximately 1/2 mile of track being realigned for this project. The pictures below were taken on a job done by my Dad and his official crew on the Southern Pacific Coast Line near Chatsworth and on the railroad's Ojai Branch in 1953. The last run by any D&H steam locomotive was on July 21, 1953 and the last of the Challengers went to the scrapper in August of that same year. Photograph of group believed to be Roanoke, Virginia employees of the company.

The company continued as a charter bus service using motorcoaches into the mid-1980s, but eventually ceased service. Built by Schenectady Locomotive Works, Schenectady, New York Shipped around Cape Horn to San Francisco. When the first trains arrived in Railroad Square in the 1870’s, the focus of the town turned to the hustle and bustle around the Depot. There are now townhouses there (it was probably just south of where the townhouse circle driveway is).

William Beecher, brother of Harriet Beecher Stowe, served as the first pastor of the church after it was constructed in 1835, and many other anti-slavery speakers spoke here including Frederick Douglas in 1852. The Burlington & Missouri River Railroad, running through the richest portion of Southern Iowa, a region abundantly supplied with timber and coal. and presenting a diversity of agricultural facilities, was projected in about 1850, but, owing to local and political causes, its progress toward completion was like a desperately fought campaign, with a succession of battles where every advantage was carried inch by inch at the point of the bayonet.
