She received the Volunteer Medal of Honour from Health and Welfare Canada and in 2001 her work was recognized with a Lifetime Achievement Award for her work around the world. Two of the novels were translated into one volume in English entitled The Outlander (Toronto, 1950) which won the Governor�s General Award in literature. Her father was a friend of Gentleman’s Magazine editor, Edward Cave, who began to publish Carter in his periodical.

Students should copy and paste from website to Microsoft Word page, then define vocabulary at Dictionary.com and take notes on the computer, finally emailing their work to the teacher. Yet within her choices for poems are also some of the short, almost haiku-like ones. Every element in 'Mariana' is painfully bounded and restricted. From all the anthologies I have reviewed, which are fairly representative of French poetry during the 20th Century, I arrive at an average figure of 7% for women contributors.

It took Angelou 15 years to write the final volume of her autobiography, A Song Flung up to Heaven (2002). The book was made into a movie for the CBC. You may also choose poems that are well known and considered “classics” to get a better sense of the genre.
