Like Jerome Bolsec, Michael Servetus (Miguel Servedo) was a medical doctor. A Spaniard, he was deeply and variously learned as a classicist, mathematics lecturer and creative medical writer. He had also had intermittent written contact with Calvin. When it came to theology, the two could not have differed more markedly. Whereas for Calvin the orthodox doctrine of the three-in-one nature of God as a Trinity of Persons was central, Servetus insistently denied this cornerstone of Trinitarian Christianity, along with the practice of infant baptism, generally considered a vital cement between Church and society.
Indeed, consciously or otherwise, Calvin had made sure of this outcome right from the earliest months of his second Genevan ministry, through the prompt composition of an essential teaching tool, a school catechism. We can only guess at the influence of Calvin’s educational programme for training young people in his doctrines. Many must have baulked and others must have remained completely untouched. However, it is a reasonable speculation that his school and catechism curriculum gave him a certain constituency of native Genevan supporters, alongside his faithful foreign immigrants.
