Example text

In the Young Avestan texts, total evil was realized in one entity, the personified Evil Spirit, Angra Mainyu, who had a completely independent will. He was entirely evil because it was his choice to be evil. The malevolent power of the Evil Spirit represented opposition to Order and therefore to the absolute goodness of Ahura Mazdā, which was Order. The human poet-sacrificers assisted the Good Spirit in maintaining this order, but if they did not adhere perfectly to their duties, the disorder of the Evil Spirit would be the result.

Disorder, or chaos, was a fact of the universe, however, and it was represented by darkness, destruction, and death. For the Avestan authors, it was a permanent threat to Order. The scenario presented by the Avesta is one in which there is a constant struggle for dominance between good and evil. There was no opportunity to slacken regarding the sacrifice and other rituals, for maintaining Order required the attentions of both humans and the gods on a regular basis. Disorder, represented by disease and death, was constantly threatening the world, and the only way to maintain Order was by revitalizing the world through sacred ritual and sacrifice.

When we look at the earliest texts, the Gāthās, there is some indication that various groups of priests were at odds with each other. If this attitude of demonizing the other camp was continued, practitioners of popular traditions might have been targeted as evil, as happened with the Druidic tradition in Europe. It is very important, in this dualistic picture, to identify the players in the “battle” between good and evil. The linear nature of Zoroastrian “history” means that there is an end to the battle.
