He gave land and sustenance not only to all Buddhist orders, he protected the followers of the Bon religion, gave land to the Muslim residents of Lhasa to build mosques and allowed them to worship freely, and gave his permission and support to Christian missionary activities.

Especially since around the time he won the Nobel Prize in 1989, his general talks—on kindness, the common human religion, nonviolence, disarmament, science, ecology and the environment, and comparative religion—are better, more moving, more lucid, and m ore pow erful in understanding and passion.
