The first reinforcements to come in were paratroopunits, and these were followed by 29th Panzer Grenadier Division. Kesselring sought in vain to wrest the operational initiative from the Allies, but had to accept that the west side of the island, garrisoned mainly by Italian for mations, would have to be evacuated.
