The next phase in the battle against the V1 was about to begin. A V1 plunges earthward towards Piccadilly, in the London borough of Westminster, on 22 June 1944. Piccadilly suffered 29 V1 missile hits during the vengeance weapon campaign. (NARA) Streaking over the English Channel, a London-bound Fi 103A-1 heads towards the waiting guns and fighters of the anti-Diver defence system during the summer of 1944. With a speed of close to 400mph, the unpredictability of English weather and the missile’s small size (which is emphasised in this amazing aerial photograph), the V1 was difficult to both acquire and track.
These ‘tip and run’ raids began in March 1942 and ended in June 1943. Targeting Allied shipping and coastal military and industrial installations on the southern coast of England, these attacks were in fact the most effective launched by the Luftwaffe on this front during the entire war. In some cases they were 100 per cent effective. These bombing raids were carried out at very low level and at great speed. Armed with a single 250 or 500kg bomb, Bf 109s and Fw 190s would attack singly or in formation.
The single-seat units were equipped with Tempest Vs, Typhoon IBs, Spitfire IXs, XIIs and XIVs and Mustang IIIs. The RAF also had great expectations for its newest secret weapon, the twin-jet Meteor I. Next in line were almost 200 heavy and light AAA guns in a belt across central Kent, running from the north bank of the estuary, through Tunbridge Wells to Leatherhead in the west. Finally, on the eastern outskirts of London, 480 barrage balloons stood guard. On the night of 16/17 June the battle was joined in earnest as 55 launchers fired 244 missiles (including 50 launched at the port cities of Portsmouth and Southampton), of which 45 crashed after takeoff.
