When I draw I ask,“What's most important in this landscape? ” I think about lines and angles; how big is this shape compared to that one? How dark? How light? Drawing keeps me humble because it is almost never easy. If I want to draw well, I need to pay attention to what I'm doing. Drawing helps me cultivate a quiet mind. I try to get into a relaxed state when drawing and detach from whether I'm drawing well or not. Sometimes I may need to remind myself that it's just paper. There's less time and effort invested in a drawing or sketch, so you can experiment and take risks to see how an idea works.
I also sketch when I am at a dinner party or out at night with a group of friends. I can tolerate frivolous banter if I am drawing; I can tolerate mediocre music, tasteless food and pointless conversation. As long as I have my sketchbook, I am having a good time! My parents could bring me anywhere as a child. As long as I had a box of crayons, I was content. I am especially inspired by urbanscapes. I draw every day. I keep moleskin journals, though sometimes I draw on brown paper bags, butcher paper or scrap paper and glue it in later. I use brown or black pens and china markers. When I travel to other countries, I sketch constantly, in order to archive and absorb what I am experiencing in a way that is more profound and personal than snapping a photo.
