This may appear a simplistic statement but can be a challenge, particularly in the case of bilingual pupils or mobile pupils. It is also important that pupils with reading and writing difficulties and with challenging behaviour are given opportunities to show their mathematical understanding. This may mean reducing the reading and writing involved in tasks.

I was unsure of the reason for this, though it could simply be that the calculation was harder. Another possibility is that the children did not seem to think it was so important to get spoken answers correct. A further possibility is that the game format, including a time limit, a competitive element and relatively complex rules, actually hindered the children’s ability to calculate rather than providing the motivation that the teacher had hoped for. The idea of a team game was also used by the teacher of the lower set, but in this case the whole class formed a team competing against the teacher.

Other children showed their strengths in different ways. Sometimes it was hard to explain or predict the circumstances in which children would perform well.
