My wingman and I stayed on the southern side of the Ham Rong bridge, whilst Le Minh Huan and Tran Nguyen Nam flew across to the northern side. Supported by Tran Nguyen Nam, Le Minh Huan downed another F-105D. In the ensuing combat, the numerical superiority of the Americans resulted in the loss of my wingman, as well as Le Minh Huan and Tran Nguyen Nam. 'Indeed, I was only able to escape through hard manoeuvring, but I lost contact with ground control in the process. Short on fuel, I had to land at the first possible opportunity, and I successfully put my MiG down in Ke Tam valley (Nghe An Province), but was immediately arrested by the locals - I was only able to regain my freedom after showing them my VPAF badge.
The VPAF command duly ordered units to take part in fewer engagements. In May 1965 Vice-Premier Le Thanh Nghi ordered the defence chiefs to expand the airfields at Hoa Lac, Yen Bai, Tho Xuan and Kep, whilst the airfields at Gia Lam and Kien An had to be totally rebuilt. The work on the latter bases was duly completed by year-end. Kep had to be ready sooner, however, in preparation for the arrival of the newly-formed 923rd Fighter Regiment. To hit the schedule, all the workers at the Bac Giang fertiliser factory were requisitioned and housed by the residents of Lang Giang.
A pair of MiG-17s from the 923rd was sent south again on 14 June, Luu Huy Chao and Le Hai taking off from Gia Lam at 1428 hrs and climbing to 500 m. Following the line of Highway 15 at 650 km/h, they soon reached Nghia Dan, where they continued their ascent up to 1000 m. Once over Thanh Chuong, at 1500 m, ground control warned them of six F-4s some 10° to port, at an altitude of 3000 m. The MiGs increased their speed to 730 km/h, and on reaching 2000 m Le Hai saw the enemy aircraft coasting in at right angles to them.
