Andy Warhol - Gallery of Prints
EARLY PRINTMAKING - this section is devoted to unique prints that were issued from 1962 through 1968 in small numbers, before many formal recorded editions were published. Warhol considered these to be unique drawings. In addition to screenprints on paper, there are screenprints on plexiglass based on frames from Warhol's films.
EDITION PRINTS (Published Prints) - enumerates works published from 1962 through 1987 in limited number of impressions.
UNIQUE EDITION PRINTS (Published Prints) - this section records works from 1963 through 1985 that were released as standard editions even though each print is unique. Since Warhol did not designate a specific classification, the term Unique Edition Prints has been selected to define this part of Published Prints. These prints relate to specific works recorded in Edition Prints.
TRIAL PROOF EDITION PRINTS (Published Prints) - these section documents unique works from 1980 through 1987 that were pulled during the proofing process of an edition and reflect color and/or compositional changes. Such prints formally termed trial proofs, began to be released as signed and numbered part of an edition in 1980 with the publication of Ten Portraits of Jews of Twentieth Century. These prints relate to specific works recorded in Edition Prints.
PERSONAL PROJECTS (Unpublished Prints) - this section records prints from 1967 through 1986 created as gifts and for unrealized proposals, as well as those inspired by paintings,. Most are unique. This section also illustrates works which, given the wide scope of Warhol's creativity and experimentation, usually resulted in unique prints that were not released as editions.
COMMISSIONED PROJECTS ( Unpublished Prints) - this section lists prints from 1967 through 1986 made on commission for magazines, books, record covers, posters, wine labels, and advertising and promotional campaigns. Each is unique. This section also illustrates works which, given the wide scope of Warhol's creativity and experimentation, usually resulted in unique prints that were not released as editions.
